CES NEWSLETTER

Headmaster News
From Our Headmaster

Reading the newsletter articles, before writing my piece as Headmaster, I am very pleased with the diverse amount of activities that have been taking place. It is not only the final performance or race that should be applauded but we need to reflect on the work that is done beforehand by teachers, children and parents to actually be able to achieve the results seen on stage or on the sports field, swimming pool or in the classroom.

Children on stage I have seen in Year 5 and also FS2 though maybe nervous have performed confidently due to the great preparation and support of their teachers. Whilst on stage they have gone out of their comfort zone but to expectant audiences excelled themselves. I am also pleased to note the inclusion of Arabic showing the collaboration between teachers.

Teachers collaborate regularly and spend meetings continuously trying to improve and develop. As Mrs. Jarrett has said in her article education is changing and not how we were taught in the 20th century. The need for critical and analytical thinkers cannot be underemphasised and recently staff have been working on developing their lessons to stretch all children to think more deeply, more creatively and ask more searching questions. Dr.Ray Taylor, who many of you know, is our Esol Education consultant has been working with staff to develop a much more analytical approach. These meetings were very well received by staff as they were also exposed to searching and provocative questions to really get them thinking!

Congratulations to everyone that participated in the recent Swimming Gala's! I was not only impressed by the levels of participation, standards of behaviour, the great support from parents but also some outstanding swimming. Well done!

Today has been Black and Orange Day followed, I hope, by a very successful Black and Orange Secondary Dance. This week we have launched collecting school bags for Educate-Me one of our key charities that we are supporting this year.

Next week is the CES PTSA Picnic on Friday 4th November which opens at 1100 and finishes, promptly, at 7.00pm. Details are included within this newsletter. It is a great relaxing day out and also raises money for our nominated charities. Please do come along, bring your friends and family. Show off this great campus and help us raise money for those worse off than ourselves. I hope to see you at this very special event.

Welcome from Our Head of Early Years

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Early Years...
We have enjoyed Learning Mornings and Arabic Workshops.
We hope the parents found these beneficial and were able to take away, from both events, some ideas of how you can support your child in their learning. We will be announcing further workshops covering the English programme shortly.

FS1 Learning Morning

FS2 Learning Morning

Y1 Learning Morning

Arabic Workshop

This week, Early Years held their first Parent Teacher Conference of the year. These types of conference meetings help parents and teachers to connect to discuss the best ways we can all support our children's learning at Cairo English School. If you were unable to attend your conference on the day, please do reschedule with the class teacher. These conferences help teachers to plan vital next steps in a child's learning.

A key area that is being enhanced in Foundation Stage this year is greater emphasis on outdoor learning. Teachers in FS are planning for this very important area of a child's development within their timetables. The outdoor environment has unique characteristics and features with equal value to indoor learning.

Outdoor learning in the Early Years is important because it supports a healthy and active lifestyle, as well as opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement. It promotes a sense of confidence and well-being, whilst providing opportunities for developing harmonious relationships with others through negotiation, turn taking, and cooperation. It also supports creativity and problem –solving skills. To name just a few of its many benefits.

Expectations of Behaviour and Uniform
At CES we have high expectations of our students in behaviour, appearance, attitude and equipment. We feel that these high expectations support the students in becoming well-rounded learners and achievers. Therefore, we would like to take a moment to remind you of some of our expectations.

Plain black shoes with no markings.
Earrings should be plain studs only. Girls should have long hair tied back neatly.
Boys should not have 'tracks' shaved into their hair.

Trainers are only allowed on PE days.

Behaviour: Expectations of behaviour are that students follow the school and bus rules to ensure the safety of all students. Students should arrive to school on time at 8am and be ready to learn. They should enter the school building calmly and to be aware of the high number of students entering at the same time. Before and after school there are no games/running around permitted in the quad or in front of the school. We would like to ask all parents that are picking up/dropping off their children to make sure they are being closely supervised.

Showbie...
We are now embracing the wonders of technology in Primary. Our children's education is far removed from our own experiences. As we debate the pros and cons of technology, Showbie allows us to develop a paperless trail of key information. This is a step forward in the 21st century. Showbie is a great communication tool and allows for interaction between students and teachers.

Homework is now communicated via Showbie and you will find all the materials you need weekly for your child once you login.

Written homework continues to be completed manually in your child's homework book. We continue to focus on writing as a skill and this will not be completed on Showbie.

From 1st November we will not be sending home paper copies of homework. It is now the expectation that as parents have signed up to the use of Showbie in line with our IT policy all communication regarding homework will be electronic.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Maureen Jarrett,
Head of Primary.

5B Assembly

5B children's comments in their reports about the Class Assembly

Mira We remembered everything. The show was finished, all of us were filled with joy and happiness.

Omar M Today is the big day; finally the day has come. Our spectacular assembly will be shown to the rest of the school. I'm so excited and so thrilled. We danced and sang as brilliantly as birds.

Adam We took a long time to practice our lines. It was a little bit hard but we learned them, they were nice.

Shady The big day came, 5b were very nervous. They walked quietly up the stairs and started doing their thing.

Khadija Finally the day had come, we were all very excited. We all danced perfectly.

Omeir In our assembly we had a lot of Greek songs. The actions were a bit hard to do because we created our own actions; we started to memorise them until it got easy to do.

Class teacher comment: It was great to see the children grow in personal confidence, especially in public speaking. Showbie was helpful for posting videos of dance moves, songs and scripts to help the children learn.
