Headmaster News
Welcome from Our Headmaster

Dear parents,

Time is flying by and soon we will be at the end of our first term. It seems like only yesterday that we were starting the new school year, and yet here we are now nearly half way through! Obviously time passes quickly when you are busy, and we certainly have been. Our sports teams have been playing, our students have been performing, and most of all we have been learning. When we return to school after the holiday of course our older students begin the season of mock exams, and before they know it will be sitting down to take the real exams, and then, in the blink of an eye, the 2018-19 school year will be over, and we will all be a year older and wiser. I would never want to wish my life away, but it will have been another good, full year and that is something we can be proud of. Until then, and it is still a long way away, there is plenty of work to do!

News from FS and Key Stage 1:

Black & Orange Day fun in FS & KS1:

What an exciting day the children had, all dressed up and ready to go on the parade!

We'll let the photos speak for themselves:

FS...

KS1...

Swimming in KS1:

Key Stage 1 have completed their first swimming unit of the year with great success. Our focus was how to be safe in the water as we learn to swim. Of note this year was the great improvement in attendance and participation in swimming lessons. Our swim coaches and Ms. Susana were delighted with the enthusiasm shown in Year 1 and Year 2. We are also so proud to see those children who were reluctant to swim at the beginning of the term entering the pool with confidence and big smiles!

Our swim unit culminated in the Year 2 Swimming Gala on Tuesday 6th November. This is the children's first swimming event at CES and Ms. Susana did a fantastic job in organising it. Parents and friends gathered to cheer our swimmers on as they took part in a variety of water games to showcase their skills in the pool: floating, diving, holding their breath, sliding in and getting out of the pool, keeping direction and changing from vertical to horizontal floating positions in the water.

We would like to thank everyone – parents, teachers, teaching assistants, our swimming coaches, Ms. Ines from the PE Department and especially Ms. Susana Vieira for encouraging us the whole way. We look forward to Term 3!

Learning in FS:

Foundation Stage children have been having fun in their learning. Now that children are well and truly settled, they are participating in creative learning activities, both inside and outside the classroom, with such enthusiasm!

Learning in FS1:

In Maths, FS1 children were looking at how they could burst a set amount of balloons by standing on an upside down table. How many children would it take until they went POP?

Learning in FS2:

On a treasure hunt:

Creating patterns:

Blue Prints for ship building:

Exploring porridge:

Goldilocks and the Three Bears story boards:

Maths fun:

News from Our Head of primary

Dear Parents,

I can hardly believe that it is the end of November already, where has the time gone? The end of term 1 assessments have been completed and teachers now begin the marking and moderation process. The children and teachers will continue to work hard up until the last day of term. It is important that all children continue to come to school all day every day to maximise their learning opportunities.

School Uniform

As the colder weather is upon us and the children begin wearing jumpers and coats to school, these should be purchased in the school shop and not branded jumpers. At this time of year, we have over 1800 children all with the same jumpers and jackets, please ensure all of the uniform is labelled with your child's name and class so they can be returned to you should they be lost.

Remembrance Day

On the 11th November, the Head Boy and Girl, along with the Deputy Heads, attended a Remembrance Day Service in Heliopolis to mark the 100th anniversary since the end of the First World War. With pride, the students wore poppies – the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War – and sang hymns melodiously in the company of dignitaries from across the globe, all of whom attended to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers of the Great War.

Black and Orange Day

We started the month with Black and Orange day. Thank you to all of the parents for providing such well thought out and constructed costumes. Children, parents and teachers had great fun on the parade.

House Football Competition

Last Thursday saw the first house event for 2018-2019. Children were randomly selected to play in a football team for their house. All of the children and staff whether playing or watching had a very enjoyable afternoon. Please see the school's Facebook page for a video compilation of the event.

We look forward to the next event!

Musical Assemblies

We would like to invite you to join us to watch your children perform in their celebration of learning assembly which will be showcasing the musical skills practiced during term 1.

Assemblies will take place during period 6 starting promptly at 2:15pm.

Please see the dates below:

3.12.18 Year 3

10.12.18 Year 4

19.12.18 Year 6

If your child usually goes home by bus but you decide to take them home directly from the assembly, please ensure that you have contacted reception prior to 1pm in order for your child to receive their green slip and the buses to be notified.

We will look forward to Year 5's performances in the new year – dates TBC.

CES is proud to announce that the University of Cambridge has invited Reem Gomaa for an interview early next month on its campus. Reem is one of the most hardworking, dedicated, skilled and respectful students in CES. Reem's outstanding academic achievements were reflected in the awards she has achieved in the June 2018 examinations. Congratulations Reem, you have proved that hard work pays off.

Secondary School News

November was another busy month in the Secondary School. Selected students attended the Remembrance Day Service (see below for more). A number of students and teachers worked hard on the secondary production of Songs and Monologues from 'The Greatest Showman' (see also below). Also, we all participated in our first interhouse competition on the afternoon of the 29th. Parents were invited to school to learn more about the new protocol for British Schools released by the Ministry in May, and for a workshop on Learning Through Enquiry.

We only have three weeks left in this term, and thus this is the last newsletter for 2018. During this time a delegation of students are going to be attending BISCMUN, with Ms March. They have been preparing and practising their skills for the past few months. We also have a rewards trip for Year 8 students to CFC. Over the Winter break, we wish our exam years (Year 10, AS, A2) all the best in their mock exam preparation.

Musical Production

'The Greatest Showman' is a story of overcoming your circumstances, rising above your station and never giving up on yourself; so it's perfect that we decided to perform it! Whilst the songs and monologues were challenging, our students (as always) rose to the challenge. Zeina Omar and Mona Hosny were excellent Assistant Directors and, as IB students, really developed their leadership skills. A big thank you to Mr Porter for the hours of music practice, to Ms Gammond for writing the monologues, and Ms Chow for her help with movement and dance!
